May 9th, 2024 in a groundbreaking leap forward for the uncrewed aviation industry, American Aerospace Technologies, Inc. (AATI) announced that they have secured a historic Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) waiver and exemption for its AiRanger™ UAS (Uncrewed Aircraft System) to conduct Beyond-Visual-Line-Of-Sight (BVLOS) flights. This significant milestone marks a new era in aerial surveillance and infrastructure monitoring, with implications that extend far beyond the confines of traditional aviation regulations.

AATI’s commitment to safety and innovation is further underscored by the integration of cutting-edge avionics solutions from Sagetech Avionics. The AiRanger is equipped with Sagetech Avionics MXS (Micro Transponder System) and ACAS X (Automatic Collision Avoidance System) processor, ensuring seamless and secure integration into the National Airspace System (NAS) while enhancing situational awareness capabilities.

The ACAS X Processor is a low SWaP-C solution which integrates with other 3rd party technologies, making this the most robust system available for integration, and testing today. With Sagetech’s TSO-approved MXS ADS-B transponder paired with the ACAS X sensor fusion, this helped to provide AATI with the surveillance and safety enhancements needed to complete their BVLOS waiver. Sagetech’s ACAS X computer integrated directly with the Echodyne EchoFlight radar and Piccolo autopilot and passed data through the Blue Sky Network for optimum results.

Many of the technologies used on the AiRanger as a part of this waiver, included (but not limited to):

  • Sagetech Avionics ADS-B Mode S MXS Transponder
  • Sagetech Avionics ACAS X Processor
  • Echodyne EchoFlight Radar
  • Blue Sky Network C2 (command and control) Skylink SATCOM modem
  • Iridium Certus satellite network
  • One Sky UTM Management (unmanned traffic management system)
  • Piccolo autopilot

Sagetech is continuing to work with other 3rd party technologies for seamless integration for BVLOS flight and are proud to of been selected to be a part of this project. This milestone marks a significant moment within the aviation community to continue to innovate for more efficient and safe air travel.
